And recognize the success of those brands who got it right. Who created content that didn&#8217;t just pitch their products. But touched their audience in some way.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m starting with a review of the best branded videos of the last 12 months. To find the best branded content, I reached out to some of my best content marketing friends for nominations.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amandamaks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amanda Maksymiw<\/a><b><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amandamaks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">,\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoePulizzi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Pulizzi<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/annhandley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ann Handley<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/timwasher\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tim Washer<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ToddWheatland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Todd Wheatland<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jchernov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Chernov<\/a>, Rob Yoegel\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/noyesjesse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jesse Noyes<\/a> for sending me their ideas on the top content of this year.<\/p>\n<p>They provided some amazing suggestions and mostly agreement (see below) on what was the best branded content. I did my own research and found that almost all of the best content this year was video (hmm, what does that mean?) So I created this list of the top 9 videos from brands this year. Metro Trains (Melbourne Australia): <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IJNR2EpS0jw#t=0\">Dumb Ways To Die<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dumb Ways To Die is a hilarious public service announcement from Metro Trains of Melbourne Australia. It was produced to educate children on train safety and quickly became a social and viral sensation after it was released late last year. The video has racked up 65 Million pageviews on YouTube. It also received 5 Cannes Lion awards. Check out the\u00a0website,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/au\/app\/dumb-ways-to-die\/id639930688?mt=8&amp;ign-mpt=uo%3D2\">iPhone app<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/tangerinekitty\/tangerine-kitty-dumb-ways-to\">mp3<\/a>\u00a0for more fun.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XpaOjMXyJGk#t=0\">Dove Real Beauty Sketches<\/a> (57 Million Pageviews)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dove launched the &#8220;Real Beauty Sketches&#8221; video in April of this year to show women to be \u201cmore grateful for their natural beauty\u201d and that they are \u201cmore beautiful than they think they are.\u201d Expect tears! Check out their full\u00a0website.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=M7FIvfx5J10\">Volvo Trucks: The Epic Split<\/a> (31 Million pageviews and counting)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Everyone is talking about (and sharing) this new online commercial that shows 53-year old actor\u00a0<b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=M7FIvfx5J10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ls-seen=\"1\">Jean-Claude Van Damme<\/a><\/b>\u00a0doing a split between two reversing Volvo trucks. Most of the comments I\u2019ve seen are people questioning if the stunt was real. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/speakeasy\/2013\/11\/15\/how-volvo-created-the-jean-claude-van-damme-video\/\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>\u00a0ran this quote from Volvo\u2019s PR manager: \u201cThe stunt is real and is performed in just one take. It\u2019s a daring stunt but we had full control. There was never any real danger involved.\u201d They report that Van Damme, used safety tethers on his feet that were attached to small, invisible shelves on the trucks\u2019 side mirrors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.\u00a0Chipotle\u2019s The Scarecrow (7 Million Views)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have to admit I don\u2019t really get this one. But there was almost unanimous consent from the smart folks I asked on this being the best piece of content produced by a brand this year. I think everyone I asked is just way cooler and smarter than me!<\/p>\n<p>I get that it\u2019s got some weird Tim Burton-esque, Pixar-like animation. I get the message. Love the call-to-action to engage further with the game. I\u2019m just not that entertained by it. I don\u2019t feel particularly informed by it. But hey, it\u2019s probably targeting much cooler hipsters and not me. \u00a0I gotta respect the effort.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Ram Trucks Superbowl Commercial: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AMpZ0TGjbWE#t=6\">God Made A Farmer<\/a> (16 Million Pageviews)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This video uses a popular monologue by Paul Harvey from a radio show in the 1980s. It really stuck with me because my Dad used to listen to Paul Harvey every day. And although he\u2019s gone, these kinds of things make me feel like he\u2019s still here. The video is a great example of how to use sounds,\u00a0words and amazing images to connect with people in a deeply emotional way. I will probably never buy a Ram Truck but I love them for making this.\u00a0(BTW &#8211; I&#8217;m a sucker for a great voice over &#8211; see\u00a0Cisco Internet of Everything\u00a0ad).<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Intel: Look Inside. Jack Andraka\u00a0(700K Pageviews)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere do breakthrough ideas begin? Maybe during 5<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0period Freshman Biology.\u201d This video shows Jack Andraka winning $75,000 from Intel for his little science fair project. Jack is a 15-year-old kid who invented a new way to test for pancreatic cancer after his Uncle was diagnosed. He won the 2012\u00a0Gordon E. Moore Award, (named after Intel\u2019s founder) at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.<\/p>\n<p>Some runner-ups:<\/p>\n<p>7.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/regenerationmusicproject.com\/\">Re:GENERATION Trailer<\/a> for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/regenerationmusicproject.com\/\">Re:GENERATION movie<\/a> by Hyundai Veloster<\/p>\n<p>8. GE \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/6secondscience.tumblr.com\/\" class=\"broken_link\">Science Fair<\/a>\u201d Vine Videos on Tumblr. These are really great and so easy to watch.<\/p>\n<p>9. Ann Handley\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.annhandley.com\/2013\/09\/20\/the-best-political-ad-ever\/\">Best Political Ad Ever<\/a>. At first, I was all like &#8220;oh I&#8217;m staying away from that whole politics thing&#8221; but this really is brilliant.<\/p>\n<p>In case you are interested, my selection criteria was content produced by brands but that wasn&#8217;t necessarily <em>about<\/em> the brand directly.
