That doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re totally bad. Sometimes these types of anchors just fit best in your sentence. They also drive conversions.<\/p>\n<p>So, in short: use them sometimes when it serves the right purpose, but keep in mind that they aren\u2019t helping your SEO ranking. When you can, use directly relevant keywords as your anchor text.<\/p>\n<h3>Anchor Spam<\/h3>\n<p>Anchor spam occurs when you use the same anchor text too often.<\/p>\n<p>Say what?! You can link to a webpage too much?<\/p>\n<p>Yep, you can \u2014 and doing so actually has some pretty adverse consequences like a drop in your rankings or even <a href=\"https:\/\/monitorbacklinks.com\/blog\/seo\/link-penalties#:~:text=Penalties%20are%20never%20good.&amp;text=Google%20gives%20out%20link%20penalties,terms%20of%20their%20quality%20guidelines.\">backlinking penalties<\/a> from Google.<\/p>\n<p>The fix? When is it a good idea to use no follow links?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When you\u2019re promoting an affiliate link<\/li>\n<li>To avoid spam comments (many brands make their blog comments no follow)<\/li>\n<li>A brand paid you to share their link<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019re referring to a low-quality site to make a point (i.e. \u201cwhat not to do\u201d guides)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Conversely, you should always use do follow links when you\u2019re linking a reputable brand for a purpose that warrants the follow (like citing a great source in a blog post).<\/p>\n<h2>Your competitors<\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s be honest: a big part of successful link building is <a href=\"https:\/\/marketinginsidergroup.com\/content-marketing\/blast-the-competition-with-consistency-in-content-marketing\/\">beating out the competition<\/a>, and there\u2019s nothing wrong with doing a little detective work to accomplish that goal.
